About Nicaragua

 Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. It borders Costa Rica to the South and Honduras to the north. The Caribbean Sea is on the east side and the Pacific Ocean is on the west side. Nicaragua is divided into three main geographical zones: The Pacific lowlands, the wet and cooler highlands and then the Caribbean lowlands. The landmass of Nicaragua is comparable to the size of Alabama.

Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in all the Americas. About 50% of Nicaragua’s population live below the poverty line. About 80% of the population of Nicaragua lives on less than two dollars a day. However, tourism is booming in this country and this growth has had a positive influence on agriculture, construction, finance and commercial industries.

Thrill-seeking Activities in Nicaragua

There are many areas of Nicaragua to experience extreme sports but a few areas in particular have become a very popular.

  • Cerro Negro

Cerro Negro is a live volcano (most recently erupted in 1999) that has come to the attention of extreme boarders. This hotspot allows the extreme volcano boarders to experience speeds of up to 59 miles per hour while coursing down the 2300 foot high volcano. There is about an hour hike up the volcano to the lip of the crater then your feet are strapped to a retrofitted snowboard and then you careen down the volcano with the ash flying and hot wind blowing.

  • Isla de Ometepe

Isla de Ometepe hosts an extreme survival run called the Fuego Y Agua 100k. This is an ultimate marathon challenge that includes terrains such as sandy beach, dirt trails, paved road, technical single track and a jungle gym section where participants navigate through trees, deep mud and disappearing trails.

Then the tour goes on to Cerro Negro for boarding down the volcano while watching the spectacular views.

The Surf Ranch Nicaragua is an action sports resort – the one and only in Nicaragua. This resort features a jungle paintball course, Nicaragua’s largest skateboard park, a tower drop into a large inflatable airbag plus the normal activities such as swimming surfing, fishing, yoga, scuba diving, rockclimbing and skateboarding.

How much will Nicaragua cost?

Nicaragua is one of the cheapest destinations in the Americas to travel to. It is close to the United States so the airfare is reasonable. The total cost of your trip to Nicaragua will probably be lowers than most other places, including international trips. Nicaragua offers cheap drinks and affordable restaurants, with a basic restaurant lunch costing about $2.50-$7 and a fancy restaurant meal costing about $7-$15.

For accommodations, there are plenty to choose from – between hostels and hotels. A double room with private bath, A/C and tv will range between $10-$30 a night and a double room with nice amenities (daily maid service, breakfast, pool) costs anywhere between $25 to $60 per night.
